Brooklyn’s New Nitehawk Cinema Revives Speakeasy Days with a Dazzling LED Facade

Not only does Brooklyn have a swanky new first run movie theater, but the Nitehawk Cinema is also a mixed-use development with an incredible LED facade. Complete with residential apartments that each have access to outdoor spaces and a street-level bar and cafe reminiscent of speakeasy days, the new theater complex also features Caliper Studio's undulating zinc and glass LED facade, which is making Williamsburg sparkle in more ways than one.

The new theater on Metropolitan Avenue offers a very cool cinematic experience that includes wholesome meals, great ambiance, comfortable seating, and – don’t you know – several sustainable building techniques. As a construction material, zinc is widely considered to be a great choice. Albeit finite, it is the 23rd most available element in the earth’s crust and mining of this material is typically less disruptive to the environment than other elements. Plus it is non-ferrous, which means that it isn’t prone to rust and therefore lasts a long time.
Matched with energy efficient LED lights — the pattern of which was generated using a custom-scripted evolutionary computational system — the Nitehawk’s facade is far more sustainable than concrete or other materials. Inspired by the Commodore, a decadent movie house built in the vicinity nearly a century ago, it makes sense that the Nitehawk would incorporate a few cutting-edge sustainable design techniques to sort of buck the fossil-fueled establishment!
Tickets to films cost $11 a pop, and you should definitely buy your tickets in advance online — this theater is filling a huge void in North Brooklyn’s movie-viewing experience. Even if you can’t make it for a film, Nitehawk is worth visiting for the cafe, where chef Saul Bolton (of The Vanderbilt and Saul) has created a changing seasonal menu. For those who want to do dinner and a movie without changing seats, the films are seated earlier than needed to allow patrons time to enjoy a meal in the actual theater where small tables are located between the seats. If you decide you need something else to nosh during the film, all you have to do it write it on a little piece of paper, stick it in a little holder, and your waiter will zip right over to bring you whatever you desire!
